CATHERINE
HALL
Originally achieving an undergraduate degree in business and transport at Cardiff University and working in an engineering firm for 5 years, I was instantly drawn towards learning British Sign Language after meeting a deaf lady at my running club. I then re-trained at the University of Central Lancashire to achieve my Postgraduate Diploma in British Sign Language / English Interpreting and Translation (and never looked back!)
I now live in Exeter and regularly travel throughout the South West area to undertake freelance interpreting, including, Plymouth, Somerset, Dorst and Cornwall. I am fully qualified, DBS enhanced and a registered interpreter with the NRCPD. I enjoy a variety of different domains of work such as, medical, business meetings (one to one and group settings), presentations, training, theatre, conference, festivals and other types of interpreting work. I enjoy working with regular clients, but also meeting and working with new people.
I am also a full member and regional contact for the Association of Sign Language Interpreting (ASLI) in Devon and Cornwall. This enables me to be kept abreast of up to date information affecting the profession, recent developments and in turn, I keep other interpreters in the area informed of such matters.
For me, interpreting is more than a job but a vocation which I pride myself in by regularly attending sessions with a mentor, personal reflection on my interpreting skills and undertaking regular continuing professional development opportunities, such as training and peer supervision.
Trying where possible to keep a work life balance, I enjoy running, learning Spanish and some trial and error gardening. This as well as hiking across Dartmoor, Exmoor and any other beautiful place in Devon and Cornwall.
